To all the goalies and hockey player in the world…

Question:

Very scary.  Hockey players know all too well of the possibility of a cup shattering when hit with a slap shot.  The locker room talk about double protection would lead one to believe that this is probably what happened, as opposed to his equipment slipping out of position.  Hope he is okay and back in the lineup.

Response:

I don’t know what the talk about double protection might mean. Wearing two cups, one on top of the other, would be like wearing two helmets on your head … it wouldn’t really protect you. The cup does its job by transferring the impact around the testicles to the pubic bone. Lots of guys wear their cup over their sweats or other underclothes, which seems foolish to me: those extra layers of clothing would increase the bulk inside the cup. The result is mashed testicles instead of a transferred impact. When I play hockey (I’m a goalie) I wear these things, in order: a regular jock a Hockey-Joc with a Banana Cup in its cup pocket a Heaton or Miller goalie jock (with its Banana cup removed) (and the rest of my stuff, which is not material to this post.) I’ve taken a few pucks directly to my cup. With the padding of the goalie jock over the Banana cup, the padding around the edge of the cup, and the lack of bunched-up stuff inside the cup, I’ve always been safe. (But then, I don’t play in the NHL.) Sometimes, when I expect a particularly hard-shooting game, I’ll skip the Banana cup and wear my Koho Ultimate Goalie Jock. It has a Jofa cup inside and an extra flap of thick hard foam-plastic over the front. I’ve taken some stiff shots in that; it makes a nice dull thud sound. Apparently these goalie jocks are a relatively new development in hockey. Some veteran players with years more experience than I have are surprised at the size of my goalie jock, as if they’d never seen one. I’m surprised that NHL goalies have such problems. I hope S
